5 Ways to Treat Thinning Hair

Thinning hair is a problem that many people struggle with. Not only does it drastically affect one’s appearance, but it can also have a negative effect on your self-esteem as well.

The good news is that there are treatments for thinning hair, so you don’t have to just accept your fate when it comes to dealing with this issue. This being the case, let’s take a look at some of the treatments, vitamins, and other ways that you can deal with thinning hair.

Medication

There are several types of medication that you can take to combat thinning hair, but the two that are probably the most well known are Minoxidil (Rogaine), and Finasteride (Propecia). Minoxidil comes in the form of a liquid that you must apply to your scalp directly. It can be bought over the counter, making it fast and easy to acquire, but it does have some downsides such as the fact that if you stop taking it, any hair that you regrow will disappear.

Finasteride, on the other hand, is a pill that you take orally. This makes it easy to use, but you may have to take it for several months before you see results. Like Minoxidil, you will end up losing any hair that you regrow if you stop taking it.

Keep in mind that there are other medications for treating thinning hair other than Minoxidil and Finasteride. Always make sure to do your research before you make a purchase so that you can make an informed decision.

Hair Transplant

A hair transplant is exactly what it sounds like; a doctor will take hair or a part of your scalp from one part of your head, and transplant it to a balding area. The surgery only takes four to eight hours but can carry a high price tag. Also, keep in mind that most insurance plans don’t cover it either, so you’ll be footing the entire bill in most cases.

As for how effective a hair transplant procedure is, that depends on the level of hair loss you have. If you’re just experiencing thinning hair in a few areas, a hair transplant can do wonders in repairing the damage and making you look years younger. On the other hand, if you’ve lost nearly all your hair, a hair transplant isn’t going to give you a full head of hair so you may want to look at other options.

Laser Therapy

Low-level laser therapy is a procedure in which your scalp is directly showered with photons. The photons are absorbed into the scalp tissue, and as a result, the cells are encouraged to promote hair growth. While this may sound complicated, it’s actually much less invasive than a hair transplant and is also completely painless.

Unfortunately, the results of laser therapy for thinning hair seem to be hit-or-miss. This being the case, the medical community can only claim that the procedure works for some people, but not others. Despite this, there have been several studies that have produced encouraging results.

Home Remedies

While some home remedies may be unreliable, there are actually many things you can do at home to prevent or treat hair loss. First and foremost is to make sure you’re eating a healthy well-balanced diet. Eating unhealthy can contribute to hair loss, so making sure that you’re getting all of the vitamins and nutrients you need is important.

You can also give yourself a scalp massage when you wash your hair. This simple procedure has been known to help stimulate hair growth. It works even better if you are sure to remove dead skin cells from your scalp when washing your hair.

Choosing the Right Treatment

There are a lot of factors to consider when looking for the best form of hair loss treatment for your situation. Things such as your budget, the amount of time it will take to see results, and how advanced your hair loss is will all play a part in making a smart decision. If you’re suffering from advanced hair loss, speaking with a professional can also be a good idea. The sooner you take action, the better your chances of reversing your hair loss will be.
