Frequently asked questions about
hair loss treatments
HOW MUCH DO HAIR RESTORATION TREATMENTS TYPICALLY COST?
There is no one size fits all treatment for hair loss. Most of the time we recommend a combination of treatments for our patients to produce the desired outcome. Each one of our patients is unique and without understanding your exact medical history and hair restoration goals, it’s impossible to estimate. However, on average, patients can expect to spend around $2600 – 4000 for the treatment series, and then reduce costs long-term to maintain results.
WHICH HAIR RESTORATION TREATMENT IS RIGHT FOR ME?
This is a challenging question to answer and one that can truly only be determined through an in-depth consultation with Dr. Galope who will review your history, properly diagnose the cause of your hair loss and find the right treatment plan for you.
WHAT ABOUT PRODUCTS FOR HAIR REGROWTH?
Some products which can be purchased in the store are good, however, most are very expensive and have not been proven to be effective. Here are ones which might be helpful:
- Nutrafol and Viviscal Professional Vitamins
- Formula 82M Minoxidil or 5% Minoxidil
You can read more about these in the vitamins and topical medications sections on this page (scroll up).
WHAT ABOUT BIOTIN AND OTHER VITAMINS?
Biotin gives the patient a great foundation for hair growth just like many other vitamins. However unless you are actually stimulating the hair follicles and monitoring hormones that may be blocking hair growth, these vitamins will not be enough.
WHAT MY HAIR REGROWTH MAINTENANCE PLAN LOOK LIKE?
There is one time only treatment for hair loss but the treatments we offer you are effective and easy to maintain! But with maintenance, your results will be long lasting. The earlier you start out with hair regrowth treatments the better.
WHAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS?
The term “pattern baldness” refers to excessive hair loss from the scalp. This is something we usually associate with the head/scalp, but it can affect your entire body. Hair loss can be caused by hormonal changes, genetics, medical conditions, or medications you are taking.
Hair loss typically begins with thinning at the top of the head, beginning at the brow and working its way back. It’s usually in the shape of a horseshoe or the letter M for men. The situation is slightly different for women. Women typically experience a more widespread loss of hair rather than a receding hair line.
Hereditary Hair Loss
Hereditary hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia and patterned baldness, affects men and women almost equally. These terms refer to inherited genes that cause hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop growing hair. The first sign of hereditary hair loss in men is a receding hair line, whereas in women, the first noticeable sign is usually overall thinning or a widening part.
Hair Loss Related to Age
Most people notice some hair loss or a slowing of their hair growth as they get older. Hair follicles eventually stop growing, resulting in thinning hair.
Alopecia areata (hair loss)
Alopecia areata is a disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles (the structures that hold hair in place), causing hair loss. This has an impact on hair all over your body, including your scalp and even your eyelashes or brows.
Hair Loss Related to Medication
Some medications cause hair loss as a side effect. If you believe this is the case for you, consult with the doctor who prescribed the medication to see if hair loss is a possible side effect. Do not stop taking the medication without first consulting with your doctor.
Hair Loss Related to Cancer Treatment
If you have chemotherapy or radiation treatment to your head or neck, you may lose all (or most) of your hair within a few weeks.
Hair Loss Related to Childbirth
Many women will lose their hair a few months after giving birth. This can also occur during times of stress in your life, such as a divorce or the death of a loved one.
Hair Loss Related to Hair Styles
If you color, perm, or relax your hair, you may be causing damage to it. This damage can cause hair loss over time.
Your hairstyle is pulling on your scalp.
If you frequently wear your hair pulled back, the constant pulling can result in permanent hair loss. Traction alopecia is the medical term for this condition.
WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE THERE?
Once we understand why you are experiencing hair loss, we can determine the best course of treatment for your specific hair restoration treatment. However, there are a few professional treatments that can help stop hair loss:
- Microneedling
- PRP Scalp Treatments Injections
HOW CAN I PREVENT FURTHER HAIR LOSS?
Hair loss occurs on a scale. If left untreated, some people will only see some thinning, while others will see complete baldness. The key is to treat your thinning hair as soon as possible.
There are several methods for those with thinning hair to prevent the loss of more active hair follicles and possibly regrow those that have been lost.
Starting with topical treatments and medications is a good place to start for those who have only noticed mild hair thinning. These are the least expensive and least invasive treatments, and they can really help to prevent further hair loss.
If you’re experiencing hair loss, an in-office consultation is the best place to start to determine the cause of your hair loss as well as the best treatment plan for you.
Working with medically trained professionals who are licensed and experienced is the only way to guarantee natural looking results after your hair loss treatment.
